As classical musicians, we channel a lot of our energy into talking about nuance and its relevance in composition. An argument about why the music of “New Complexity” must be notated the way it is typically boils down to “there are too many nuances that can’t be notated any other way”.

The concert master playing the Sibelius concerto, one of the most demanding pieces in the whole repertoire, unprepared, on short notice, without practicing it at all….is just bullshit, complete bullshit. And Rodrigo again forgets to tune the violin that is handed to him. Probably his fingers have perfect pitch and always know how to change position to stay in tune, something that even Paganini wouldn’t have managed.
Let us try to listen between the cracks of what is obvious. Let us try to look at the things in an awkward and unusual way. There is nothing wrong with being awkward. Mein Artikel über Ferneyhough neulich war natürlich nicht wirklich eine Kritik an der Musik Ferneyhoughs, sondern eine Parodie des Partiturengötzenkultes. Ich finde Ferneyhoughs Musik ganz okay, auch wenn sie mich nicht wirklich vom Stuhl haut.
