Es wurde 1936 initiiert und wird seit 1969 gemeinsam von der Stadt Witten und dem Westdeutschen Rundfunk j&#228;hrlich am letzten April-Wochenende veranstaltet. Vergangenes Jahr musste das Festival binnen k&#252;rzester Zeit komplett in den virtuellen Raum wechseln. 2021 hat man bereits von Vornherein einige Audiovisuelle Projekte programmiert \u2013 etwa eine Mixed-Media-Komposition des franz&#246;sischen Komponist Brice Pauset, der heuer im Mittelpunkt des Festivals stand. Als sich Charlotte Greve entschied, Berlin zu verlassen, war sie bereits erfolgreich mit ihrem rein akustischen, bis heute existierenden Lisbeth Quartett. Inspiriert von der vielf&#228;ltigen Musikszene, orientierte sie sich in Brooklyn noch einmal ganz neu. 2014 gr&#252;ndete sie das Quartett Wood River. Daf&#252;r komponiert sie Songs, die stark von Alternative Rock beeinflusst sind. Au&#223;er Saxofon spielt Greve darin auch Synthesizer und singt. Aus Wood River hervorgegangen ist Sooner, ihr Duo mit Simon Jermyn, dem Bassisten der Band. Bei Sooner spielt er Gitarre. Charlotte Greve bezeichnet das Duo als die Ambient-Variante des Quartetts: Es kommt mehr Elektronik zum Einsatz, die Songs klingen luftiger, es gibt gr&#246;&#223;eren Raum f&#252;r Improvisationen \u2013 und ein eigenes Repertoire.<\/p>\n<p>21:05 \u2013 22:00 | SWR2<br \/>\n<strong>SWR2 JAZZ SESSION: THE AMERICAN JAZZ QUARTET 1986 IN STUTTGART<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">VON GERD FILTGEN. Im Jahr 1986 formierten sich vier wichtige Modern Jazz Repr&#228;sentanten unter dem Bandnamen American Jazz Quartet f&#252;r eine Europatournee. Dabei handelte es sich nicht etwa um eine f&#252;r dieses Vorhaben bunt zusammengew&#252;rfelte Gruppe: Schon im Liberation Music Orchestra des Bassisten Charlie Haden, der auch hier mitwirkt, trafen der Saxofonist Dewey Redman, der Gitarrist Mick Goodrick und der Drummer Paul Motian zusammen. In langen, mit exzellenten Improvisationen angereicherten Themen demonstrierten die vier Musiker, wie harmonisch sie miteinander kommunizierten. Der feinnervige Kammerjazz blieb bei Erscheinen nahezu unbeachtet, entfaltete aber sp&#228;ter vor allem in Europa enormen Einfluss. Jimmy Giuffre hatte bereits eine beachtliche Karriere als Holzbl&#228;ser, Komponist und Arrangeur des Big Band- und Westcoast-Jazz hinter sich, als er sich mit 40 noch einmal auf ganz neues musikalisches Terrain begab. 1961 stie&#223; er mit Paul Bley am Piano und Steve Swallow am Kontrabass in ungewohnte, experimentelle Gefilde vor. Eigenwillig komponierte Miniaturen, unter anderem die ersten St&#252;cke der jungen Carla Bley, sind hier das Sprungbrett f&#252;r Improvisationen, die sich mitunter komplett von Metrum und Harmonik l&#246;sen.
