Dabei geht es vor allem darum, etwas m&#246;glichst Pers&#246;nliches zu schenken. Wor&#252;ber w&#252;rde Sie oder Er sich besonders freuen? Was k&#246;nnte Sie oder Er gut gebrauchen? Und was gibt es f&#252;r M&#246;glichkeiten, ressourcenschonend Materialien wiederzuverwerten? Um ihm einen ganz individuellen Klangcharakter zu verleihen, bedarf es der Methode des sogenannten Circuit Bendig. Dabei handelt es sich um eine Art kreatives Kurzschlie&#223;en von elektronischen Spielzeugen und Spielzeuginstrumenten, um deren Klanglichkeit zu manipulieren. Dazu muss man zun&#228;chst das gew&#228;hlte Spielzeug so weit sezieren, bis man an die Platine herankommt. Hat man diese einmal freigelegt, ist es im Grunde genommen das Ziel, neue Verbindungen zwischen Schaltkreisen herzustellen, so dass Daten fehlgeleitet werden. Dabei spielt ein gewisser Random-Faktor eine wesentliche Rolle, denn man wei&#223; vorab nie, was am Ende klanglich aus der Operation herauskommt.<\/p>\n<p>Besonders gut eignen sich &#228;ltere Spielzeuge, am besten Modelle aus den 90er oder 80er Jahren. Heutzutage sind elektronische Spielzeuge in der Regel mit einem Chip ausgestattet, der zum Schutz mit einer Epoxid-Schicht &#252;berzogen ist, so dass man so gut wie gar nicht an ihn rankommt. Diese Beschichtung sollte man auch nicht versuchen zu schmelzen oder wegzul&#246;ten, denn es entstehen dabei giftige D&#228;mpfe. Um den Chip herum sieht man meist nur einen Schaltplan und Druckfelder f&#252;r die Kn&#246;pfe des Spielzeuges. Ebenso aber auch sprechende Tiere oder sonstige Sprach-Synthese-Spielzeuge (wie z.B. First Talking Computer, Speak&amp;Read, o.&#228;.). Hat man nun das Gl&#252;ck, auf dem Flohmarkt oder im Internet ein &#228;lteres, gebrauchtes Spielzeug zu ergattern, welches noch mit einer Platine mit zahlreichen L&#246;tstellen ausgestattet ist, wird es richtig spa&#223;ig! Jedoch Vorsicht: Am besten l&#228;sst man die Finger von Ger&#228;ten, die an den Strom angeschlossen werden m&#252;ssen und macht sich nur an Instrumenten mit niedriger Spannung, also an batteriebetriebenen Ger&#228;ten, zu schaffen.<\/p>\n<p>W&#228;hrend das Spielzeug nun eingeschaltet ist, tastet man die Platine per Trial and Error &#8211; Methode, am besten mit einem Jumper-Kabel oder mit zwei kleinen Schraubenziehern, auf Punkte ab, die verbunden miteinander zu einer Klangver&#228;nderung f&#252;hren. Am leichtesten macht man es sich, wenn man vorab von der Platine ein Foto macht und ausdruckt, so dass man sich dann auf dem Ausdruck alle Punkte, die man sp&#228;ter miteinander verbinden m&#246;chte, markieren kann.<\/p>\n<p>Was man dabei klanglich entdeckt, sind z.B. auf verschiedenste Weise zersetze Kl&#228;nge, Zufalls-Wiederholungsmuster oder auch Neukombinationen von Kl&#228;ngen sowie Tonh&#246;henver&#228;nderungen. Letzteres ist besonders bei Keyboards sehr reizvoll und beliebt. Man muss hierf&#252;r den Widerstand finden, &#252;ber den die Spannung geregelt wird, mit der die Tonh&#246;hen kontrolliert werden. Hat man ihn gefunden, kann man ihn entfernen und stattdessen durch irgendeine Art von variablem Widerstand ersetzen. Dies kann beispielsweise ein Fotowiderstand sein, dessen Werte sich je nach Lichteinfall &#228;ndern. Auf diese Weise k&#246;nnen Tonh&#246;hen quasi durch einen Lichtsensor manipuliert werden. Erstellt man zwischen diesen Punkten nun neue Schaltkreise, wird man ziemlich &#252;berrascht! Es kann z.B. sein, dass ein Hersteller beispielsweise das gleiche Modell einer Platine f&#252;r zwei unterschiedliche Produkte verwendet, also einerseits f&#252;r ein sehr einfaches Keyboard, bei dem keine Klangfarben&#228;nderungen gemacht werden oder zus&#228;tzliche Sounds abgespielt werden k&#246;nnen, und andererseits noch f&#252;r ein aufwendigeres Keyboard mit zus&#228;tzlichen Effekten oder Sounds. Bei der einfachen Ausf&#252;hrung bleiben dann bestimme Stellen unverbunden. Verbindet man diese mit angel&#246;teten Kabeln, erweitert man das Klangspektrum seines Keyboards um neue Sounds und -Beispiel-Medleys.<\/p>\n<p>Wer sp&#228;ter zwischen Herstellerzustand und gehacktem Zustand wechseln m&#246;chte, kann an entsprechenden Stellen &#252;brigens zus&#228;tzliche Kippschalter einbauen. Nach Belieben kann man des Weiteren auch noch die Kabelverbindungen vom Lautsprecher trennen und stattdessen ein Klinkenkabel anl&#246;ten, um das Ger&#228;t an einen Laptop oder ein Audio-Interface anzuschlie&#223;en. F&#252;r den Fall, dass man ein Spielzeug der neueren Generation zur Hand hat, welches nur eingeschr&#228;nkte M&#246;glichkeiten des Hackings auf Hardware-Ebene bietet, sei auch noch die Variante des Software-basierten Sound-Hackings erw&#228;hnt. Man schlie&#223;t dazu das Ger&#228;t an den Computer an, liest den Audio-Input in gew&#252;nschter Programmierumgebung, und jagt ihn nach Herzenslust durch selbstprogrammierte Effekte.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Kleine Geschichtskunde<\/h3>\n<p>Der Begriff Circuit Bendig geht zur&#252;ck auf den amerikanischen Medienk&#252;nstler und Instrumentenbauer Reed Ghazala, dessen experimentelle elektronische Instrumente unter anderem im NYC Museum of Modern Art ausgestellt wurden. Ghazala pr&#228;gte den Begriff Circuit Bending bereits in den 60iger Jahren, als er diese Technik nach Experimenten an einem Spielzeug &#8211; 9 Volt &#8211; Transistorverst&#228;rker entdeckte:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201eThe year was &#8217;66 or &#8217;67. I had left a toy 9-volt transistor amplifier amidst the clutter of my desk drawer, the back of its housing missing and with the power turned on. When I closed the drawer, to my amazement, there suddenly came from within my desk miniature versions of the sounds I associated with the massive synthesizers of the day. Like the $250,000 Columbia-Princeton machine. While they&#8217;re everywhere now, sound synthesizers at that time were still quite a mystery to most folks, and weren&#8217;t that easy to come by. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When I realized that the sounds I heard were the result of the toy amplifier&#8217;s electronics accidentally shorting out against something metallic it was resting on, two ideas immediately struck: <\/em><br \/>\n<em>If these sounds are being created by accident, what could be done by purpose?
